Lakeway Links energy surcharge

Europe’s Emission Trading System (EU ETS) started in the maritime sector on 1st January 2024. The introduction of this compliance-based carbon cost means that operators (including Lakeway Link) need to buy emission rights to cover their CO2 emissions each year. Lakeway Link route between Poland and Sweden have been regulated under this EU ETS from the beginning of this year.

As a reminder, the European Commission agreed on a three-year phase-in period of the EU ETS for shipping.

The agreed three-year phase-in period is as follows:

• 40% as from 1 January 2024 (i.e. a 60% discount)

• 70% as from 1 January 2025 (i.e. a 30% discount)

• 100% as from 1 January 2026 (i.e. no discount)

This means that as from 1 January 2025, the discount on the carbon component of Lakeway Links Energy Surcharge will decrease from 60% to 30%.
