Major Upgrade of Lakeway Express to further strengthen efficiency, safety and lower emissions

In December 2025, Lakeway Express will enter the the shipyard for an extensive upgrade programme aimed at reducing emissions and further improving both safety and working conditions on board. This is an important step in our commitment to delivering a modern and future-ready service.

A key part of the upgrade is a newly designed bulbous bow, tailored to the vessel’s operating profile. It reduces wave resistance and improves water flow around the hull, which lowers the power needed at service speed and lower emissions.

The vessel will also receive new high-efficiency propeller blades, optimised for its speed range and load characteristics. These blades reduce slip and improve thrust efficiency across all operating modes. To support consistent and energy-efficient sailing, an Eco Control system will be installed. This smart control system continuously adjusts propeller pitch and engine loading to keep fuel consumption as low and efficient as possible during transit. The upgrade also includes new stabilisers that reduce vessel motion and improve both cargo protection and onboard comfort — especially valuable in rough weather. In addition, 13 bathrooms will be fully refurbished to modern standards, improving safety, hygiene, and overall comfort for the crew.

“Early estimates indicate that these upgrades can reduce emissions by up to 20 percent. For us, the upgrade of Lakeway Express is a strategic investment that strengthens the long-term quality of our service and supports our ambition to deliver maritime transport with loew envirnmental impact and higher operational performance. When the vessel returns to service in Week 3, 2026, our customers will see the benefits — improved efficiency, enhanced stability, and a vessel ready to meet future operational and regulatory demands.” says Per Zandren, CEO Lakeway Link.

Sustainability is not a single initiative — it is a long-term approach that guides how we operate and invest. The enhancements to Lakeway Express demonstrate how existing tonnage can be upgraded to meet future expectations in safety, efficiency, and environmental performance. This work is part of our broader ambition to contribute to a more sustainable maritime industry.

NOTE: From 23 December 2025, Lakeway Express will enter the shipyard for an extensive upgrade and will return to service in Week 3, 2026. During this period, the Södertälje–Gdynia service will be operated by M/V Mistral. An updated schedule will be published soon.
